Carey and Sons Marine has a rich history that spans generations, rooted in a passion for boating and a commitment to excellent customer service. The company was founded by Vanno Carey, who started with a small showroom in Breckenridge, Texas. From these humble beginnings, the Carey family built a legacy in the marine industry that continues to thrive today.

As the business grew, it expanded to include a location at Possum Kingdom Lake (PK). These early locations, while no longer in operation, laid the foundation for the company’s future success and established the Carey name as synonymous with quality boats and exceptional service in Texas.

Romney Carey’s journey to continuing his family’s legacy in the boating business is a tale of personal growth, divine inspiration, and serendipity. After serving in the military and Air Force, Romney pursued higher education while still in service. Upon completing his studies, he embarked on a career in environmental consulting.

As Romney progressed in his professional life, he reached a point where he felt he had “tapped out” in his career. It was during this time of reflection that he experienced a profound realization – a calling to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather Vanno and father in the marine business. Romney described this moment as standing at a “T in the road,” sensing a higher purpose guiding him towards his family’s tradition.

The turning point came when Romney’s uncle Dick and brother Robert, both residents of Granbury, Texas, encouraged him to visit their town.

Heeding their advice, Romney made the trip, and within a mere two hours of arriving, he had an epiphany. “This was it,” he thought, instantly recognizing Granbury as the perfect place to establish his own chapter in the family’s marine business story.

While exploring potential locations, Romney stumbled upon the current site of the Granbury dealership.

Initially, the property owner informed Romney that the location had already been sold. However, in a twist of fate, the owner took a leap of faith in Romney, believing in his vision and potential.

During their conversation, Romney made a bold promise: within five years, he would purchase the remaining neighboring properties. Remarkably, Romney followed through on this commitment in just three years, demonstrating his dedication and business acumen.

Excited about this new venture, Romney reached out to his father, sharing the news and inviting him to be part of this new beginning. It was at this pivotal moment that Romney’s father suggested a significant change: the business, which had been known as Carey’s Marine up until this point, should now become “Carey and Sons Marine.” This new name not only reflected the family’s continued involvement but also symbolized the passing of the torch to the next generation.

This decision not only expanded the family’s marine business presence but also strengthened their bond through their shared passion for boating. The name change to Carey and Sons Marine marked a new era for the business, emphasizing the family’s legacy and commitment to future growth.

Today, the Carey family proudly operates the Granbury location, carrying forward the tradition of excellence established by Vanno Carey. While the original

Breckenridge and Possum Kingdom Lake locations are no longer in operation, their spirit lives on in the current dealership.
